Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression Course(PMVA) GSA Model (Not Bild RRN Certified)

If Want to learn how to work in a consistent, legal and professional manner to defuse and prevent aggression or manage it in the safest way possible with concern for the individual’s well-being at the heart of all interventions?

... Then this MAV Consultancy(PMVA) One Day (General Services Association) GSA Training Is For YOU

Theory / Knowledge Base

Practical Skills

Breakaway / disengagement skills from wrist grabs, clothing grabs, strangles, hair pulls, bear hugs and bites. Awareness of distance and defence against punches and kicks.

Physical Intervention

Students will learn the importance of communication as a team and to the patient / service user whilst deploying restraint techniques. They will learn a graded approach which includes, Friendly Come Along (prompting and guiding), low level least restrictive holds (Figure of Four Hold, Fore Arm Hold), responding to increased patient level of violence and changing to more secure holds (Clench Fist Hold and Thumb in Palm Hold and as a last resort Finger & Thumb Hold.)

Walking a person, sitting them down and restraint in chairs

If a patient continues to offer a high level of resistance and it is not possible to place them in chairs participants will be taught to take the patient backwards (as a three person team) in a controlled descent to manage them on the floor in a Supine (on their back) position. They will be taught a number of holds to manage the patient in this position, de-escalate & leave or support the patient to stand up.

Disengage/Roll the patient over into a Supine position from the Prone

If a patient tries to take themselves to the ground or the team think it is the safest place to manage a patient, participants will learn how to take the patient to their knees and de-escalate or disengage or if the patient continues to fight they will be taught to take the patient into the Prone (face down position as a two person or three person team). It is acknowledged that this is a less than ideal position so participants will be taught how to disengage or to roll the patient over into a Supine position.

Use of Safety Pod

On the full three day course, students will be introduced to the UK Safety Pod, a piece of equipment available in hospitals and designed to provide a dignified response when managing a violent patient and to reduce the amount of time in restraint.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions about our competitively priced services.

The Nursing Agencies generally require individuals to have had experience of working in a care setting before considering employing them. You would have to discuss your experience with the Nursing Agency / agencies you approach for work having your own certificate my help.

What is Prevention & Management of Violence & Aggression PMVA?

PMVA is a term used by the NHS to describe a set of skills to help staff working with people who have a mental illness or learning disability, defuse and manage potential conflict by using techniques of verbal and non–verbal communication, and physical skills to disengage from an aggressor and or to apply physical intervention / restraint techniques if necessary.

How much Does the Course Cost ?

£230 for the full three day course for people previously untrained or who have been out of practice for some time, £85 for the one day refresher course for previously trained people. At the end of the course you would receive a digital/electronic copy that you can send to Nursing Agencies when seeking work.

Is it better to do a full 3 day course or a one day refresher course?

Many people attend the courses that have previously been trained but they do not have a certificate to prove it. Most Nursing Agencies and NHS Hospitals require evidence of a full 3 day course certificate. After this then a annual one day refresher course is generally acceptable . It is best however if you discuss which would be acceptable to your Nursing Agency.

Would my Certificate be widely recognised?

The General Services Association (GSA) system of techniques is taught in many NHS and Independent sector Mental Health Hospitals and challenging behaviour services, for hospitals not using the GSA system the techniques are generally compatible therefore most hospitals & Nursing Agencies accept the certificate. To be one hundred percent certain though please ask your Nursing Agency if the certificate would be acceptable to them.

Will I get work in a Mental Health Hospital?

The Nursing Agencies generally require individuals to have had experience of working in a care setting before considering employing them. You would have to discuss your experience with the Nursing Agency / agencies you approach for work having your own certificate my help.

Are there any advantages to me having my own certificate?

Nursing Agencies upload your certificate onto NHS hospital data bases and seek work for you in the hospitals they have contracts with. If you pay for and have your own certificate you can submit it to as many Nursing Agencies as you like increasing your work opportunities.

If My Nursing Agency Books me on the Course will I get a copy of my Certificate?

No the certificate goes to the Nursing Agency as they payed for the place. If you wish to get your own certificate please book on and pay for your place and attend the course.

How long will my certificate last?

Certificates are dated for a year after which time you would need to attend a further refresher course to stay in date and be employable with the Nursing Agencies.

I have done it before can I just pay and get my certificate without attending?

No you must attend the course and be assessed for your competence in demonstrating the techniques and approaches safely.

Where are the courses held?

The open courses where individuals can book on and pay for them selves are held in Leeds at the Warrior Factory Martial Arts Academy Unit 3 Clayton Park, Clayton Wood rise, Leeds LS16 6RF. Dr. Ashim Bettadapura

MBBS, LLB (Hons), MSc, FRCPsych

Consultant in General Adult and Forensic Psychiatry

I have known Mr Patrick Duggan professionally and as a personal friend for almost three years. Over this period, I have observed him train nursing and healthcare staff in hospitals and care settings.

Patrick is knowledgeable and brings a kind and gentle yet very professional approach to his practice. He is skilled and he can motivate staff and manages to get the best out of people even in difficult situations.

Patrick’s practice focuses on the proactive prevention of violence and aggression, rather than merely the reactive response to incidents. He has contributed to the Multi-Disciplinary team and trained nursing staff to create calm and conflict free environment, and prepare detailed care plans to help them anticipate and avoid violence.

Patrick has trained me in ‘breakaway training’; while the course is mandatory for me to practice as a psychiatrist, I also found this invaluable to anticipate and feel confident that I can work safely.

I wish him and MAV consultancy, the very best!

Dr Yvonne Smith (Cpsychol)

Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (AFBPs)

I was impressed by Patrick's wealth of knowledge which was apparent from the outset, his professionalism and his fully inclusive delivery of training. Patrick had the ability to put everyone at ease and enable all attendees to develop a remarkable sense of confidence.

The content of the course incorporated a wide range of techniques and interventions.

Patrick was able to answer any questions posed and went over and above in his delivery of the training to demonstrate the practical skills to deliver safe and effective techniques.

I highly recommend training with Patrick Duggan - his PMVA training is a truly inspirational course.
